This course is intended to provide the knowledge to enable personnel without designated security duties in connection with a Port Facility Security Plan (PFSP) to enhance security in accordance with the requirements of Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 1974 as amended, the ISPS Code, and section 308 of the Canadian Marine Transportation Security Regulations (MTSR), the IMDG Code, the IMO/ILO Code of Practice on Security in Ports, and guidance contained in IMO MSC.1/Circ.1341.

Learning Outcomes

Those who successfully complete this course should achieve the required standard of competence outlined in Section 308 of the Canadian MTSR and the ISPS Code, thereby contributing to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness, recognition of security threats and appropriate responses. This knowledge shall include but is not limited to:

  • The meaning and the consequential requirements of the different security levels;
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans;
  • Recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances, and devices;
  • Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioral patterns of person who are likely to threaten security; and
  • Techniques used to circumvent security measures.
