Description
This is a basic safety + survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats + advanced firefighting refresher training course designed to comply with the current STCW Convention. This course will refresh the seafarer’s skills in basic emergency duties through demonstrations and practical drills and exercises. This course meets the requirements of Chapter VI, Section A-VI/1, paragraph 3 of the STCW Convention, Chapter VI, Section A-VI/2, paragraph 5 of the STCW Convention, and chapter VI, Section A-VI/3, paragraph 5 of the STCW convention including 2010 Manila Amendments.Learning Outcomes
- This refresher training course is designed to comply with the current STCW Conventions and to refresh the seafarers' skills in basic emergency duties through demonstrations and practical drills and exercises.

Prerequisites
- Marine Institute approved medical clearance;
- SCBA mask Fit Test prior to course start date;
- Valid MED with respect to STCW Basic Safety (or equivalent ie MED A1 & B2)
- Valid MED with respect to Proficiency in Survival craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (or equivalent, ie MED B1)
- Valid MED with respect to Advanced Firefighting (or equivalent ie MED C)
Before attending this course, you must take an online fatigue management course from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.
A Candidate Document Number (CDN) is required to complete this course. If you already have a Candidate Document Number (CDN), there is no cost to complete the Fatigue Management course.
If you don’t yet have a CDN, you can apply for one through Transport Canada using this link.
To access the Fatigue Management at Sea course, visit the CCOHS registration page and follow these steps:
• Step 1: Register with the CCOHS.
• Step 2: Sign-in using the password provided in the registration confirmation email.
Please note, free access is provided to Canadian seafarers courtesy of Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security. Once you’re done the course, make sure to print a copy of your training certificate. This certificate proves that you’ve completed the training and you will need to provide a copy to shortcoursehelp@mi.mun.ca prior to attending.

Copy of valid Transport Canada Seafarer's medical is required for this training. Medicals should be provided to administration prior to course start date but students can bring the medical along the morning of registration. (Should you have a valid medical from another jurisdiction, please contact administration to have the medical validated for training.) To comply with Provincial OH&S legislation the OSSC requires all students participating in this course to be clean shaven and must provide a fit test certificate (quantitative) for use of Scott AV 3000 style face piece. Fit testing for this training can be completed at the OSSC. Please note that there is a fee associated for this service of $65 plus tax.
Please bring 2 changes of clothes and 2 towel each day for practical sessions. Dress for prevailing weather conditions. **NO WARM CLOTHING WILL BE PROVIDED**
Please be advised that the OSSC daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.
If you are eligible to receive a T2202A for tax purposes, they will be available on Short Course Registration in February of the following year. Students are advised to log into your Destiny account in order to print a copy of your T2202A form.
