Description
Part A: Electronic Positioning Systems: This is an electronic navigation course required to obtain a Canadian Watchkeeping Mate Certificate. The purpose of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skill required for the correct operation of navigational equipment.Part B: Simulated Electronic Navigation Operational: The course will cover the requirements of the Standards of Training Certificate and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention of 1978 (including 2010 Manila amendments). It will provide the student a thorough knowledge of the application of the Collision Regulations and the principles to be observed in keeping a navigational watch in a simulated environment while using electronic aids to plot the vessel's position and progress.
Learning Outcomes
Part A: Students will:- Understand the principle operation theory of bridge electronic navigation systems.
- Use shipboard navigation systems for position fixing.
- Use land-based navigation systems for position fixing.
- Use satellite-based systems for position fixing.
- Operate navigation equipment correctly.
Part B: Students will:
- Prepare and execute a safe open sea passage.
- Use electronic navigation systems to fix the ships position on a marine chart.
- Plot other vessels, and take necessary action to avoid collision without putting the vessel at risk.
- Follow master standing orders, and maintain a bridge log.

NOTE: Students will be issued two certificates of achievement upon successful completion

Prerequisites
Part A: NonePart B: Students must have successfully completed the following training course and examinations prior to register for the SEN-O training course:
1) Part A of this course or previously completed Electronic Positioning System (EPS)
2) Radio Communication (ROC-MC);
3) Chartwork and Pilotage, Level 2 (C&P2);
4) Navigation Safety (NS1);
NOTE: If the student is enrolled in a cadet training program; the student should have a good foundation and understanding of Chartwork and the Collision Regulations.
