Description

This course is designed for delivery to high school students and provides the theoretical and practical knowledge required to safely and effectively participate in ice activities and observe various forms of rescue.

Learning Outcomes

This course enables the student to:
  • Assess water and ice conditions as they relate to activities on ice surfaces.
  • Understand the problems unprotected victims may encounter in ice-related situations.
  • Properly select and use available personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify the factors, rationale, and influences involved in making a rescue versus recovery decision.
  • Identify hazards and safety concerns during ice operations.
  • Develop skills for performing a non-entry rescue of an icebound victim while recognizing hazards to rescuers.
  • Develop skills to assist and support ice rescue personnel by tending attached tether lines.
  • Develop skills through observation of both self and assisted rescues.

Please be advised that the daily course schedules are subject to change and all participants should be prepared for course deliveries outside normal business hours (i.e. evenings and weekends). You will be notified if any such change is necessary. In the event of inclement weather, students should visit www.mi.mun.ca for important announcements regarding class cancellations and rescheduling. Announcements regarding class cancellations will also be on local radio stations.

If you are eligible to receive a T2202A for tax purposes, they will be available on Short Course Registration in February of the following year. Students are advised to log into your Destiny account in order to print a copy of your T2202A form.
