This intermediate preparatory course is designed to provide ship’s masters and officers with knowledge and skills to understand ship stability and keep the vessel in a safe loading condition at all times. 

A preparatory course does not replace the official Transport Canada exams; rather, it supports your learning, helps you understand the required subject matter, and prepares you to meet Transport Canada’s standards and expectations.

Please note that the official certification examination must still be written directly with Transport Canada.

  • Basic ship design and construction

  • Weather tight integrity and associated factors

  • Transverse stability principles

  • Practical use and interpretation of intact trim and stability data

  • Effects of vessel operation, gear modifications, and environmental conditions on stability

  • Effects of loading and discharging weights on vessel stability

  • Measuring and gauging initial and overall stability of a vessel at sea
