4 Courses Required

This certificate level program is designed to provide detailed information on important aspects of the farming of salmonid species. In particular, land-based rearing systems, feeds and feeding, fish health and biosecurity as well as occupational health and safety will be covered. This program is meant for individuals currently working in the salmonid aquaculture industry or less experienced individuals with appropriate academic preparation (namely the course entitled Introduction to Salmonid Aquaculture).

Admission Requirements

Applicants will have completed the course Introduction to Salmonid Aquaculture 705899 OR have aquaculture industry experience acceptable to the admissions committee AND have either a senior high school Grade 12 Graduation Certificate; a Grade 11 Public Examination Matriculation Certificate; a Level III Adult Basic Education (ABE) Certificate; other qualifications meeting Department of Education requirements or high school equivalency; or be eligible for entry under mature student status.

Where circumstances warrant, applicants who do not meet the regulations for admission to the Certificate in Aquaculture (Salmonid) may be admitted with the approval of the Marine Institute’s Committee on Special Admissions.

Applicants applying under mature student status must be 21 years of age or older within one month of the start of the program and are required to demonstrate that they have gained educational, technical or practical expertise, in the aquaculture industry. Mature applicants must provide the following documentation:

  • a resume
  • one letter of recommendation from employer who can attest to the applicant's aquaculture industry experience (only needed if student has not completed Introduction to Salmonid Aquaculture 705899)
  • official academic transcripts of high school and post-secondary studies
  • proof of age
  • a letter from the applicant outlining the grounds for requesting special consideration.
